In mass extinction, we make the five mass extinctions in the Earth's history a subject of discussion. In five game levels (Ordovician, Devonian, Permian, Triassic and Cretaceous), the user learns about the various life forms affected (e.g., Dinosaurs) and the cause of their extinction.

In a further level, the user discovers the sixth "man-made" mass extinction of species, which encourages the user to critically examine climate change and global warming. Unlike conventional learning methods, virtual reality (VR) makes it possible to relive past "realities" with a high degree of immersion.

Virtual reality: learning, playing, reflecting.
We designed a unique functional principle for mass extinction, which is demonstrated in an exemplary gameplay. When you start the application, you see the main menu, where you can choose between levels or extinction scenarios. The user is teleported to the surface of the Earth, where she or he finds a selection of the creatures from that time in their natural habitats.

The first level was prototyped using the game engine Unreal Engine. We developed a walkable VR environment that could be experienced with the Oculus Rift VR headset with multiple senses. For the overall design, we worked intensively on typography, colors, icons and interfaces.
